Click on image to zoom inOver the last couple of months I've started to notice a few interesting old advertising "posters" which have miraculously survived despite having been painted directly onto the brickwork of walls in various streets in and around Leith. They must be well over half a century old (probably more) and they are interesting for me both typographically (like the sweet and bitter ad) and as a piece of social history long forgotten. What exactly are blue coupons? What did you have to buy to collect them? Was it aimed at "wise" ladies simply because they did all the shopping or because it was a reward for them personally: "Save enough and that racy range of ankle length lingerie can be yours in no time"? If anyone spots any other interesting old faded ads, let me know and I'll photograph them before some developer removes them forever.
